The American Board of Medical Specialties' (ABMS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements are becoming onerous, says Heidi Waldorf, MD. It forces physicians to memorize rather than learn information, and it surveys patients about frivolous topics, like the cleanliness of office bathrooms. MOC requirements cost physicians money. Meanwhile data show that a majority of ABMS participating Medical Boards have financially benefited since MOC was implemented. The American Board of Internal Medicine said it "got it wrong," and has suspended aspects of MOC.
