Fundus Autofluorescence to Differentiate Hereditary from Acquired Retinal Disease

Sherry Bass, OD, and Jerome Sherman, OD, both from SUNY College of Optometry, discuss the various clinical applications of fundus autofluorescence to help in detecting and monitoring the progression of retinal diseases. Specifically, autofluorescence allows clinicians to diagnose conditions which are invisible using ophthalmoscopy. Drs. Bass and Sherman have both used the technology to detect disease in patients who were completely asymptomatic. Fundus autofluorescence has also helped them detect the progression of geographic atrophy when unclear on photographs alone.
