In this episode, moderators Derek Cunningham, OD, and Walt Whitley, OD, MBA, offer a frank discussion of the utility of the Lipiview/Lipiflow system for the diagnosis and management of patients with dry eye due to meibomian gland disease. Although the system can provide benefits to patients—with some reporting improvement in dry eye symptoms after just one treatment—the cost structure of the procedure introduces barriers to adoption and raises questions about whether the patients who need it the most will ultimately have access to the technology. The episode concludes with Dr. Whitley interviewing Scott Hauswirth, OD, about identifying ideal candidates for a Lipiflow treatment. Dr. Hauswirth has been using Lipiflow since 2008, when his clinic was involved in clinical trials with the device.
