Point-of-Care Testing

by Derek Cunningham, OD, Mile Brujic, OD, Walter Whitley, OD

Derek Cunningham, OD, of Laser Eye Consultants in Austin, Texas, and Walter Whitley, OD, of Virginia Eye Consultants in Norfolk, Virginia, discuss whether point-of-care testing is something clinicians should be incorporating in their optometric practice. Dr. Cunningham explains that while adoption may be slow, the tests will ultimately provide great clinical utility. Dr. Whitley believes that this immediate access to information will allow clinicians to provide earlier treatment. Mile Brujic, OD, of Optometric Insights, describes the adoption of point-of-care testing in his practice, stating that it has been particularly useful as he is treating more chronic disease states, specifically dry eye.
