First-Line Treatment: SLT vs Prostaglandin

by Derek Cunningham, OD, Walter Whitley, OD

Prostaglandin drops have traditionally been the first-line treatment for open-angle glaucoma. Numerous studies, however, find SLT to be roughly equivalent in safety and efficacy. Walt says that he and most ODs have been using drops, but more recently, he has been favoring SLT for the boost in patients' compliance. Derek says that SLT could become the first-line treatment, but prostaglandin drops are still the best option for many glaucoma patients.
