How Will ICD-10 Affect ODs?

by Derek Cunningham, OD, Walter Whitley, OD

Derek and Walt weigh in on the ICD-10, and what it means for optometrists. The new revision increases the number of disease codes from 13,000 in ICD-9 to 68,000. Derek says that ICD-10 allows physicians to go into a much higher level of specificity with diagnoses, and therefore it will allow better tracking of disease in terms of public health. Walt says there is overblown concern about ICD-10, and that the additional codes will make it much easier for clinicians to measure quality and improve outcomes for patients.
