Whitney Hauser, OD, and Leslie O’Dell, OD, discuss patients’ sensitivities to certain skin care products when used around the eye. Dr. O’Dell warns that, just because a product’s label says that it is hypoallergenic, it can still be harmful to the skin. She provides a few tips on how to educate patients about which products to avoid. Dr. Hauser says that it is important for eye care physicians to not only evaluate patients’ drug allergies but to investigate potential food allergies as well. This will help to avoid problems such as rashes or hives on the skin around the eye.
