Genetic Polymorphisms Predict Response to Antioxidants and Zinc in Patients with AMD

AREDS demonstrated that antioxidants and zinc supplements decreased progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in patients with moderate to severe disease. For additional understanding of this subject, Carl C. Awh, MD, of Tennessee Retina in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, conducted a study on genotype-directed therapy which evaluated the interaction between genetics, nutritional supplements and AMD progression. Here, he describes those findings and how they may impact the management of AMD.
