Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries

Derek Cunningham, OD, and Walt Whitley, OD, MBA, discuss the growing role of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS), especially in the management of patients with concomitant cataracts. They discuss glaucoma surgical techniques and devices—such as the iStent and Trabectome—that are designed to decrease intraocular pressure and help patients gain better control without relying on their compliance with drops. Then, Dr. Whitley interviews Eric Schmidt, OD, of Omni Eye Specialists in Wilmington, North Carolina, about the Trabectome and iStent procedures performed in his practice. Dr. Schmidt stresses the importance of making sure the patient’s anterior chamber can accommodate the stent and discusses expected outcomes after surgery.
