Jerry Sherman, OD, recaps his "Greatest Posterior Segment Course Ever," which put the spotlight on technology for the detection of glaucomatous and retinal pathologies. Dr. Sherman asserts that OCT will be the standard of care once more than 50% of optometrists are using the device in practice. Currently, according to Dr Sherman, that penetration is about 30%. He also focused his comments on a deeper dive into the AREDS data and reflected on the controversy specifically over the amount of zinc that certain formulations contain. Because zinc can be detrimental in certain situation, Dr. Sherman believes this issue deserves more attention. The use of genetic testing may offer a way to tailor nutritional recommendations and treatment to specific patient populations.
